Nagaland NCD vows ‘zero tolerance’ on extortion; seeks CFMG action

DIMAPUR, OCT 30 (NPN)

While Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) renewed the appeal on all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to seriously abide with the resolution of “One Government, One Tax” at the October 31, 2013 mass public rally in Dimapur it however regretted that instead of coming together under one umbrella, the number of NPGs has since multiplied to more than 28 splinter groups.
Extending support against formation of new splinter groups among NPGs, NCD through its president G.K. Rengma and press secretary Tia Longchar described the recent joint declaration of the Naga Tribe Hohos (NTH) and Forum for Naga Reconciliation(FNR) “that the formation of new Naga political faction shall not be accepted” as a right step and the need of the hour.
NCD reminded that as the apex Naga tribal body in Dimapur comprising of 20 Naga tribes and four(4) affiliated CSOs, it has fully endorsed the above joint resolution of NTHs and FNR. It termed resolution as the “right anti-dote against fragmentation of NPGs” and multiple and unabated taxation as the “root cause of multiplying Naga political factions.”
NCD also applauded the “exemplary decision” of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) for banning NPGs from levying tax on local entrepreneurs under YTC jurisdiction. NCD said such a directive “should be emulated by other Naga tribal apex hohos.”
NCD also demanded that the Cease Fire Monitoring Group (CFMG) ensure that all cadres of NPGs under ceasefire, were kept within designated camps and provided with necessary ration and maintenance so as to protect public from being harassed.
NCD lamented that Dimapur the premier city, was “losing its luster as a shopping destination and a hub of trade and commerce” due to strangulation of the city by unabated extortion and market syndicate system.
Further, with onset of festive season, NCD reiterated that it will “ensure zero tolerance” on extortion, illegal taxation or any other anti-social activities. In the light of the above NCD has appealed to every member of the public of Dimapur to be “ever alert and vigilant”, so that any such incident was promptly reported to police and the appropriate authorities.
