Staff reporter

The Nagaland Conservatory of Music (NCM) celebrated 25 years of choral leadership of Maestro Lipokmar Tzudir with its 25th Anniversary Concert, “Echoes of Time,” on Tuesday at Dimapur’s Town Hall. The special event honored Maestro Lipokmar Tzudir, marking 25 years of his outstanding contributions as a choral conductor and music educator.
The evening featured performances by the NCM Choir conducted by Maestro Lipokmar Tzudir and special appearance by the NCMeX Children’s Choir, and Gianmarco Puglisi, offering a vibrant blend of classical and contemporary choral works.
A native of Mokokchung, Tzudir began his professional journey in the Philippines in 2000 and later conducted choirs in the United Kingdom. He founded NCM in 2012, which has since grown into a premier centre for formal music education in Nagaland, now affiliated with Nagaland University. Over the years, his choirs have represented India on international platforms across America, Europe, and Asia, and collaborated with global organisations like Scandinavia Kulturmix in Norway.
Educated at Patkai Christian College and the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music (Philippines), Tzudir also holds a postgraduate degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of Sheffield, UK. Among his many accolades are the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2006) and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Music (2010).
Through a short documentary video, Maestro Lipokmar stated that his journey in music had been driven by a desire to create platforms for people to practice and appreciate choral art. Over the years, he faced challenges, nurtured choirs, collaborated internationally, and worked to preserve and promote the culture of Northeast India. He noted that he valued teaching and education over personal recognition, believing that the true measure of his work are seen in the growth and achievements of his students. He expressed deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to this journey and added that if his students lived up to the expectations, their actions and their stories would narrate what his contributions were, and he believed that would defined his career.
The concert not only showcased the talent nurtured by NCM but also highlighted Tzudir’s enduring contribution to choral music in India and abroad.
Through this celebration, the conservatory paid tribute to Tzudir’s vision, leadership, and dedication to nurturing generations of musicians, reinforcing its role in fostering choral excellence in Nagaland.
Similar event will be held on October 31 at RCEMPA, Jotsoma, Kohima.
