Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) intensified efforts to modernise rail travel across North Eastern region in 2025, achieving significant progress in infrastructure development, electrification and safety, officials said on Sunday.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal K Sharma said 13 pairs of trains under the zone were upgraded from conventional ICF coaches to modern LHB rakes during the year, enhancing passenger safety, ride comfort and operational efficiency.
Electrification gathered pace across NFR network, with 3,724.57 route kilometres (RKM) electrified by March 2025.
During the 2024-25 financial year, electrification works covering 1,141.38 RKM were completed. In the current 2025-26 financial year, another 146.44 RKM were electrified up to October 7, taking the total electrified network to 3,871 RKM.
Division-wise, electrification includes 782.72 RKM in Rangiya division, 1,104.63 RKM in Lumding and 481.21 RKM in Tinsukia divisions, all in Assam.
Safety continued to remain a top priority for NFR, which operates across all the region as well as parts of West Bengal and north Bihar.
To enhance safety at level crossings, NFR expanded modern signalling infrastructure, with 624 interlocked level crossing gates and 582 sliding boom installations currently in place.
Advanced technology has also been deployed along sensitive wildlife corridors, where AI-based Intrusion Detection Systems helped protect over 160 elephants in 2025 by preventing train-animal collisions.
NFR’s role in national development was highlighted in September when Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line to the nation at Aizawl.
