Naga National Council (NNC), Lotha Region, has stressed the urgent need for unity among the Naga people and called for recognition of genuine freedom fighters to safeguard the original objectives of the Naga political movement.
In a statement issued by Medanpeyu NNC Lotha Region, Hathungo Kithan, the organisation noted that the Naga national freedom movement, once founded on unity and collective purpose, has over time fragmented into more than 30 groups and factions. It said such divisions have weakened the original cause, with many groups drifting away from the ideals of genuine freedom and instead pursuing personal gain, land control and privilege.
The NNC stated that while a few groups and individuals continue to stand sincerely for Naga sovereignty and integration of all Naga-inhabited areas, their efforts are often overshadowed or misunderstood due to widespread disunity. Without unity, it cautioned, achieving a meaningful or lasting solution for the Naga people would remain impossible.
The statement further urged the public and civil society organisations to recognise and identify authentic freedom fighters who are principled and genuinely committed to the welfare and future of the Naga people. It warned that failure to do so would allow self-serving and violent elements to grow stronger, while true freedom fighters risk being forgotten by history.
Emphasising responsibility towards future generations, the NNC appealed to all concerned to reflect on and uphold the core values of the Naga struggle and to work collectively towards unity, integrity and the greater welfare of the Naga nation.
