A coordination meeting between the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) office bearers and representatives of seven provisional units of the association was held on January 31 at the NWA office in view of the forthcoming NWA 30th Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship and the NWA 1st Under-15 & Provisional Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship 2026, scheduled to be held on March 6 and 7 at Khuochiezhie.
The provisional units represented at the meeting included the Lotha Wrestling Association, Sumi Wrestling Association, Pochury Wrestling Association, Rengma Wrestling Association, Chang Wrestling Association, Sangtam Wrestling Association and Tikhir Wrestling Association.
According to a press statement issued by NWA Joint Secretary Kuzhovesa Soho, the association has decided to organise, for the first time since the formation of the provisional units, a separate state-level Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship exclusively for the provisional associations. The championship will be held on Day 1 (March 6) along with the Under-15 Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship.
The statement informed that all provisional units will be entitled to field eight wrestlers each. The wrestlers will compete under a three-group division system, following the format practiced by the three affiliated units of the NWA. The top four wrestlers (first to fourth positions) in each group will be awarded cash prizes along with citations, while all participating wrestlers will also receive cash incentives.
Day 2 of the event, scheduled for March 7, will feature the 30th Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship, which will be graced by Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio as the special guest, the statement added.
The NWA has appealed to wrestling enthusiasts from across the state and beyond to attend and witness what it described as a mega traditional sports festival. Further details of the championships will be announced in due course.
