Nagaland observes ‘World Day Against Trafficking in Persons’

Nagaland joined people across the globe in observing “World Day Against Trafficking in Persons” in accordance to United Nations (UN) declaration to observe July 30 as a day to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”

Miqlat Ministry: Miqlat Ministry NBCCWD observed the day at Don Bosco Institute of Development and Leadership (DBIDL) hall under the theme “Stronger together”. 
At the programme, keynote address was delivered by former general secretary of Asia pacific Baptist federation, Rev. P Bonny Resu, who stressed on trafficking based on the Biblical context. He also lauded the ministry for taking the initiative to create awareness on the subject. 
Rev. Resu said people choose to remain indifferent to such pressing issues unless they go through it. Cautioning that such tragedy could happen to anyone, Rev. Resu urged all to come out of the comfort zone and be in the forefront in creating awareness on the issue confronting the human race.
As part of the programme, a panel session on human trafficking was held wherein issue of human trafficking in Nagaland was broadly discussed by the panellists. 
Moderator of the session, Vitono Gugu Haralu, reminded that the human trafficking was much prevalent through child trafficking and child adoption. 
Youth Net, training and talent management operation supervisor, Tsepila Zhimomi highlighted the importance of screening the recruitment agencies before placement.  
Prodigals Home, director K Ela shared her experience on dealing with child trafficking, sexual exploitation and safer migration. Ela said that there are two sides human trafficking – the victim and the perpetrator. She stressed on the importance of delivering justice to victim and the need to change the mindset of the perpetrator.
While dwelling on the issue in the context of media fraternity, journalist and Dimapur Press Club general secretary Henlly Phom Odyuo lamented on the unavailability of adequate information on the issue. She stressed on the importance of sharing information for wider coverage of the issue.
 Other panellists, ADCP (crime) and PRO Dimapur Police Relo T Aye and Alole Tsuhah from Miqlat Ministry also spoke on the issue. A short video on human trafficking by Dreamz Unlimited was also screened during the programme.

ZUNHEBOTO: Sakhi One Stop Centre Zunheboto observed ‘World Day Against Trafficking in Persons’ at Kids World Montessori School Zunheboto under the theme, “You Can Free Me”.
A DIPR report stated that the programme commenced with an invocation by  counsellor OSC, Vinivi Sumi followed by keynote address by Centre, administrator OSC, Alovini Yeptho.
Case worker OSC, Helito L.Chophi spoke on the root causes of human trafficking and how to remain vigilant to the menace of human trafficking.
Students of Kids World Montessori presented a special number and the programme concluded with benediction by Kids World Montessori School, teacher Kali Achumi.
MOKOKCHUNG: Sakhi-One Stop Centre Mokokchung in collaboration with Nagaland Police DEF Mokokchung observed “World Day Against Trafficking in Persons” under the theme “You can free me” at New reserve DEF, Mokokchung.
A press release by Sakhi-One Stop Centre stated that the programme was organised to create awareness on the ill practices of human trafficking against the women and children which is prevailing in Naga Society. 
In a keynote address, additional SP and nodal officer of Sakhi-OSC, Mokokchung Y. Tumchobemo Yanthan challenged the people to not remain silent but to rise against the problem and be advocates against human trafficking.
Speakers, Center administrator Sakhi-OSC, Wangshinaro Yaden and Panel lawyer MDLSA, Moatemjen spoke on “Modern Day slavery – Human trafficking” and The Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Children Act 1956 (SITA), Immoral Traffic Prevention Amendment Bill 2006 and Trafficking Of Persons (Prevention, Protection And Rehabilitation) Bill 2018 respectively.
PHEK: District administration Phek DLCW, Mahila Shakti Kendra Phek & Sakhi- One Stop Centre, Phek in collaboration with DEF Phek & 5th NAP Bn Phek observed “World Day Against Trafficking in Persons”.
In a keynote address, SDO (C) Phek T. Lemlila Sangtam while highlighting the aims and objectives of the day said observance of such day was necessary to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights”.
DCPO Phek, Ketubu highlighted the importance of spreading awareness and sensitization campaign regarding anti human trafficking. 
Centre Administrator Sakhi- One Stop Centre, Phek, Jitsiasa Nyusou presented a documentary on human trafficking while Women Welfare Officer DLCW, Mahila Shakti Kendra Phek, Vileno Kapu emphasized on the importance of empowering women by availing women related schemes and programmes to alleviate the menace in the society. 
Altogether 300 participants, comprising of law enforcement personnel, youth, leaders from different organizations and NGOs attended the programme.
KIPHIRE: To mark the day, district administration, District Level Centre for Women (MSK) and Sakhi one stop centre organised a programme at deluxe point, Kiphire town.
Wetsho Lasushe EAC (P) in his short speech said human trafficking was a serious crime that exploits children, women and men for numerous purposes indulging in force labour and sex. He said that every country was affected by human trafficking and even in the state there was no exception. He encouraged all the citizens of Kiphire to cooperate and to fight against the trafficking.
Addl. SP Kiphire, Sentilong highlighted that trafficking can be manifested in so many ways including prostitution, child labour, domestic workers, begging, child marriage, illegal adoption and organ trade.
Reminding that anybody can be a victim to traffickers, he informed all to lodge complain at police station or even in the District Magistrate in the event of such incident. He further called upon all students, teenagers to be more aware about the trafficking in the days to come.
NCC, Kiphire presented a street play on the world day against trafficking. Awareness on trafficking was given by Tsosing Counsellor, (OST) where she called upon all the students to take action in the campus, join or establish a club to raise awareness about the human trafficking.
Church leaders, school students, NGOs, ward leaders attended the programme. The programme was chaired by Visuthong T. District Coordinator (MSK).
WOKHA:  In Wokha too, the day was observed at DBHSS Youth Centre organized by District Administration in collaboration with Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK) and Sakhi-One Stop Centre. The programme was held under the theme “You Can Free Me”.
Theme speaker, advocate  Shanchobeni P Lotha, Project Assistant, WDLSA while addressing the gathering said the root causes of trafficking was poverty, lack of employment opportunities, low socio-economic status, lack of education and awareness. She appealed to all to put thoughtful efforts to address the issue and fight against trafficking. 
She emphasized on the intervention of central and state government initiatives like protection homes for girls which provide, custodial care, education, vocational training and rehabilitation.
Women Welfare Officer, MSK, Dr. Wonchano E Enny enlightened the participants about the activities of Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK) under BetiBachaoBetiPadhao (BBBP). 
Advocate Nancy said Sakhi-One stop centre emphasized on providing integrated support and assistance under one roof to women affected by violence in private and public spaces.
The programme was chaired by EAC (P) Molosangla Ozkum while vote of thanks was delivered by EAC (P) Yentinoungbou.
LONGLENG: In Longleng, the day was observed at Indoor Stadium Longleng, organised by district administration, Mahila Shakti Kendra and Sakhi-One Stop Centre Longleng.  
The introductory note for the event was given by EAC Longleng, Rohbi Sangtam, where he said that trafficking in person usually take place due to one’s ignorance. He encouraged the gathering to be responsible to educate and aware the youngster on child trafficking.
On the occasion, DC Longleng, John Tsulise Sangtam highlighted the importance of observation of the world day against trafficking in person. He challenged the gathering to be vigilant to stop this menace while also seeking the cooperation of all the stalk holders. Resource person literature secretary, PBCA Longleng, Chingong Phom  defined trafficking as putting someone in an uncomfortable situation where one earn out of another’s life. She also stated that trafficking denotes transferring of human by someone either by force or agreement and that the victims were mostly from economically unstable community and villages. Penal lawyer DLSA Longleng, P.Monyei Phom presented the report on human trafficking from the legal perspective.
