Nagaland Pencak Silat stars qualify for Asian C’ship

DIMAPUR, MAY 23 (NPN): In a historic achievement for Nagaland’s martial arts fraternity, two outstanding Pencak Silat athletes —Kevin and Avikali V. Sheqi have qualified to represent India at the 10th Asian Senior Pencak Silat Championship 2026, scheduled to be held in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam from July 15 to 23, 2026.
The duo secured their spots during the National Open Selection Trials held in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, from May 16 to 19. Competing against top athletes from across the country, they showcased exceptional grit, technical brilliance and fighting spirit to emerge victorious in the Tanding (Sparring) category of their respective weight divisions.
This milestone marks a defining moment for the growth and recognition of Pencak Silat in Nagaland, reflecting years of disciplined training and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Adding further prestige, Kevin, Avikali V. Sheqi and Chithuviyo Kaiho successfully completed the Indian National Referee, Jury and Coaches Training Course 2026, conducted under the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT) and organized by the Indian Pencak Silat Federation.
The course was led by internationally acclaimed technical expert Mdm. Titih Hayati of Indonesia, widely known as the “Coach of the Coaches.” The intensive programme focused on strengthening international officiating standards, advanced coaching methodologies, judging systems, discipline and professionalism.
The Nagaland Pencak Silat Association expressed immense pride over the athletes’ achievements, describing the moment as a historic breakthrough for the State. The association noted that success on both competitive and technical platforms highlights Nagaland’s growing strength and potential in the international martial arts arena.
As preparations begin for the upcoming Asian Championship in Vietnam, the association extended its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the athletes, expressing confidence that they will represent India and Nagaland with honour, courage and distinction on the international stage.
