Nagaland Police Headquarters (PHQ) observed Police Commemoration Day 2025 on Tuesday with solemnity and reverence, paying tribute to police personnel across the country who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony, held at PHQ Kohima, featured a parade and wreath-laying, attended by senior officers, retired personnel, and members of the Nagaland Police fraternity.
Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma recalled the origins of Police Commemoration Day, tracing it to the 1959 ambush on a CRPF patrol party led by DCIO Karam Singh by Chinese troops in Aksai Chin, Ladakh, where ten personnel were killed and others taken captive. Their bodies were later cremated at Hot Springs on November 14, 1959. In 1960, police chiefs across India resolved to observe October 21 annually in honour of such sacrifices.
Highlighting the significance of the day, Sharma informed that 186 police personnel across India had lost their lives in 2025 while safeguarding the nation’s integrity. He described the observance as a collective moment of homage to those who upheld the ideals of service and duty.
Paying tribute to the late constable Chandan Das of the 9th NAP (IR), Nagaland Police, Sharma lauded his exemplary dedication and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
The DGP also commended the discipline and commitment of Nagaland Police personnel in maintaining law and order, public peace, and citizen trust. He said their service had strengthened the police delivery system and brought honour to the department.
Emphasising that the day was not only for mourning but also for celebrating the spirit of selfless service, Sharma urged the Force to draw inspiration from the martyrs and renew their pledge to serve the people and uphold national integrity.
The roll of honour listing the 186 police personnel who sacrificed their lives in 2025 was read out by Rankathung Vikram Ezung, AIGP (OPS), Kohima.
The programme concluded with a moment of silence and floral tributes in memory of the fallen heroes.
