The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), the District Congress Committee Kohima (DCC) along with remaining DCCs of Nagaland organized a protest against the proposed Bill to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
A press release by the vice chairperson of the NPCC communications department, Andrew Humtsoe, stated that MGNREGA is a lifeline for rural people, adding that It gives guaranteed work, supports poor families, and helps people earn with dignity. For many villages in Nagaland and across India, this Act is the main source of income during hard times, the release stated.
During the protest, leaders and workers said that repealing MGNREGA would hurt farmers, daily wage earners, women, and the poorest sections of society, and lead to increase in unemployment and push many families into deeper hardship.
The speakers reminded that MGNREGA has helped people during natural disasters, economic crises, and emergencies, and that removing the Act would mean turning away from the needs of rural India.
The NPCC and Kohima DCC strongly demanded that the Government withdraw the Bill and protect MGNREGA, while calling for strengthening the scheme with proper funding and timely payment of wages instead of ending it.
The release further stated that the protest sent a clear message: development must help the poor, not abandon them. It said the Congress party stands firm in defending the rights, dignity, and livelihood of rural people, adding that the voice of the village matters and the fight for justice continues.
