The Department of School Education has informed that the Smart Attendance Management and Informative Leaves (SMILE) App, introduced under the NECTAR Project, has entered its second year of implementation.
The department stated that due to the large number of users, including teachers and staff across the State, the application had initially faced technical issues caused by heavy traffic. However, the technical team has been continuously addressing user-reported problems and most glitches have now been resolved.
A new and improved version of the SMILE App is now available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. All employees have been advised to update the application at the earliest.
The department informed that regular monitoring of attendance will commence from January 27, 2026. All employees have been directed to mark their attendance on the SMILE App using their mobile phones or tablets without fail.
It cautioned that non-compliance or poor attendance would invite appropriate disciplinary action, including withholding of salary, and would also be reflected in the APAR, potentially affecting promotions and other service-related benefits.
For effective implementation, employees have been asked to mark attendance strictly in accordance with prescribed working hours and designated time slots applicable to their category.
The SMILE App is equipped with an offline attendance feature, allowing users in areas with limited or no internet connectivity to record attendance without an active network.
Offline data can be stored for up to 30 days and will be automatically synchronised once connectivity is restored. In areas without internet access, the SMILE App Coordinator has been directed to ensure that the kiosk tablet is taken to a network-enabled location on a fortnightly basis—preferably on the 15th and the last working day of every month—for mandatory data synchronisation.
Heads of schools and institutions have been directed to ensure strict compliance and regular usage by all staff. For redressal of issues, users may WhatsApp or call the following helpline numbers: 8974102488, 6909644519, 7005655098.
