Nagaland: School of Music Dimapur celebrates 25th annual function

Staff Reporter

School of Music Dimapur (SOMD) celebrated its 25th annual function programme at the school premises on Saturday, with Advisor, CAWD & Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, gracing the occasion as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Khamo congratulated the co-creator, founder and director of SOMD and his family for their vision, sacrifices and dedicated service over the past 25 years. He lauded their commitment to nurturing children and serving the Church and the wider community through music.
Reflecting on the theme of the programme, Khamo described the performances as “heart-melting” and emphasised that music is an integral part of human life. While acknowledging that people engage in music for various reasons whether as a hobby, for entertainment or as a profession, he encouraged musicians, particularly Christians, to use their talents for a higher purpose.
Highlighting the state government’s efforts to promote music and cultural talents, Khamo said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, the Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) was established to recognise, identify and nurture the talents of Naga youth. He stated that the government has been creating platforms to provide training, professional grooming and opportunities for young artistes to showcase their skills.
He further noted that the state has made significant strides on national and international platforms through collaborations beyond the state and the country, leading to global recognition of Naga music and talent. “Today, people from across India and abroad come to Nagaland to witness our performances,” he said, adding that music has emerged as a viable profession for many young people.
Khamo also stressed the importance of moral values alongside talent and skill, asserting that without strong morals, individuals cannot become truly good human beings regardless of their abilities. Emphasising competency and professionalism in an increasingly competitive world, he urged institutions to equip young people with confidence and clarity to face challenges and make ethical choices. Drawing from Christian teachings, he called for the incorporation of Christian values in personal lives and in the upbringing of children to build a better society and bring positive change.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Suhrholu Nyekha and Tuda, welcome note delivered by board member, Lima Longkumer and invocation offered by Senior Pastor of Faithway Church, Z Aba Khesoh.
Highlights of the programme included a series of individual, band and choir performances by SOMD students and staff, including, The Kids Band, Asangla, SOMD hostellers, Asalu and Longli, a drum piece by Khotso Nyekha, and “Praise the Lord of Love” by the SOMD Choir. Other performances included a musical piece conducted by I/C Joseph Zemai, “It’s a Beautiful Day” by the Children’s Choir, a solo by Anyua Wangsu, and “How Can I Keep from Singing” by the SOMD staff.
The event also witnessed the awarding of certificates to students in recognition of their achievements and progress. Founder-director of SOMD, Apoi Nyekha, delivered the word of gratitude.
