Nagaland: SCMI, NBCC conduct National Human Rights Workshop in Kohima

DIMAPUR

Students Christian Movement of India (SCMI), in collaboration with the Social Concern Department of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), conducted a three-day National Level Human Rights Workshop from December 6 to 8, 2025 at Kohima under the theme “Weaving Connections of Faith and Solidarity for Human Rights.” The workshop brought together around 30 student leaders representing 12 states across the country.
Delivering the keynote address, Rev. Dr. Mar Pongener, general secretary of NBCC, affirmed the timeliness of the theme, stressing that faith and human rights are inseparable in a nation grappling with discrimination, polarization, gender-based violence, shrinking democratic spaces, and the struggles of marginalized, migrant, and indigenous communities. He reminded participants that Jesus’ ministry was profoundly humanizing—lifting the marginalized, confronting injustice, and calling believers to active compassion.
Sessions on the opening day were led by Vitono Gugu Haralu and Rev. Karang Maram, who highlighted ongoing human rights challenges in the Northeast. Dr. Villo Naleo, secretary, Social Concern (NBCC), addressed the impact of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), noting its contribution to fear and hardship among communities. The second day featured a Bible study on migration by Inatoli Aye, followed by Advocate Atungo Shitri’s session on “Land, Migration and Indigenous Identity.” R. Lungleng engaged participants with a discussion on “Youth and Politics.” On the concluding day, Seno Tsühah shared insights from her work with indigenous communities, underscoring the importance of community-led initiatives and reaffirming the workshop’s call for justice, dignity, and collective responsibility.
The workshop concluded with participants pledging renewed commitment to uphold human rights advocacy through faith-based action, solidarity, and leadership. Organisers expressed gratitude to all resource persons and participants for their active involvement and meaningful contributions.
