DIMAPUR, AUG 4 (NPN): Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Nagaland with October 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, the chief electoral officer (CEO) Bhagyashree Banayat announced on Tuesday.
According to the notification, the revision aims to ensure that all eligible citizens were included in the electoral rolls while removing ineligible entries. The electoral registration officers (EROs) of each assembly constituency have been made responsible for conducting the exercise.
The preparatory phase would be carried out from August 5-14, during which officials would hold meetings with political parties and other stakeholders, set up help desks, train booth level officers (BLOs), disseminate information and print enumeration forms.
House-to-house verification would be conducted from August 16 to September 14, when BLOs would distribute and later collect pre-filled enumeration forms from every existing elector. Electors would be required to submit the completed forms along with the necessary information.
During the same period, polling stations would be rationalised to ensure that no polling station has more than 1,200 electors without prior approval of the Commission.
The draft electoral roll would be published on September 20. It would include only those existing electors who have submitted their duly filled enumeration forms during the enumeration period or through the online system after verification.
Electors who fail to submit the forms within the stipulated period may apply for inclusion by filing Form 6 along with the prescribed declaration during the claims and objections period.
Claims and objections would be accepted from September 20 to October 20, followed by scrutiny and disposal of claims until November 18. During this phase, EROs and assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) would verify the eligibility of applicants, conduct enquiries where necessary and refer suspected cases of foreign nationals to the competent authority under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The final electoral roll would be published on November 22.
CEO Nagaland has appealed to electors, political parties and all stakeholders to actively participate in the revision exercise and cooperate in ensuring the preparation of an error-free electoral roll for the state.
