Nagaland showcases disaster management innovations at BRICS meet

DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Nagaland showcased a series of technology-driven disaster risk reduction and resilience-building initiatives at the 2nd BRICS Technical Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) held in Puri, Odisha, from June 3-5, 2026.
Representing India at the international forum, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) highlighted four flagship initiatives that have gained recognition as innovative models in disaster governance, climate resilience, and digital transformation.
Among them was the Disaster Risk Transfer and Protection Scheme (DRTPS), a parametric disaster financing mechanism designed to provide rapid financial assistance during extreme rainfall and climate-related disasters through data-driven risk transfer instruments.
NSDMA also presented ELIONA, an advanced supercomputing and artificial intelligence platform that supports high-resolution weather forecasting, climate modelling, hazard simulations, risk analytics, and decision-making. The platform integrates artificial intelligence, machine learning, geographic information systems (GIS), and advanced computing technologies to generate actionable forecasts and risk assessments.
Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority further showcased the Nagaland State Disaster Management Information System (NSDMIS), a digital platform that integrates real-time data collection, incident reporting, resource tracking, damage assessment, relief monitoring, and emergency response coordination, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making during emergencies.
Another key initiative featured was the Decentralized Relief Payment System (DRPS), which enables transparent and timely disbursement of disaster relief assistance directly to beneficiaries, improving accountability and reducing delays.
Delegates from BRICS member countries appreciated Nagaland’s integrated approach that combines technology, governance innovation, community participation, and climate resilience financing.
Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority informed that state’s participation reflected India’s commitment to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing emerging disaster and climate risks.
It also stated that initiatives such as DRTPS, ELIONA, NSDMIS and DRPS are helping position Nagaland as a hub for disaster risk governance innovation while advancing the vision of a resilient state through science, technology, community participation and proactive governance.
