A new Sulabh Public Toilet was inaugurated at Gorapatti, Dimapur, by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) chairman Hukheto Yepthomi as special guest on Monday.
The pay-and-use facility, set up under the CSR initiative of ECGC Limited in collaboration with DMC, has been constructed and will be maintained by Sulabh International Social Service Organization (SISSO).
The two-storey complex provides separate sections for men and women, with Indian and western-style toilets, bathrooms and hand-wash basins.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Yepthomi expressed satisfaction at the launch of the facility in Dimapur’s urban area, terming it a commendable initiative to ensure accessible hygiene for all. He congratulated those involved in the project and urged citizens to support and maintain such amenities as acts of collective civic responsibility.
DMC Chief Executive Officer Thungchambemo Tungoe also addressed the gathering, encouraging the public to make proper use of the facility and emphasising the importance of keeping it clean for long-term sustainability.
SISSO Controller Krishna Kant Jha briefed that this was the third Sulabh public toilet undertaken by the organisation in Dimapur, after similar facilities at Central Jail and District Hospital. He expressed hope that more such projects would be implemented in future.
DMC Ward-2 Councillor Neingutoulie Kenguruse described the initiative as one of the best undertaken under CSR, aimed at providing sanitation and civic amenities for a cleaner and better Dimapur. He acknowledged challenges in securing adequate land in market areas but assured that discussions on maintenance were underway, with the facility to be maintained for 20 years.
The programme began with invocation prayer by Bihari Baptist Church pastor DK Peter and concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Zakiesatuo colony secretary Zarenthung.
