Nagaland supports Union govt’s GST reform initiative

Nagaland’s Minister of Power and member of the GST Council, K.G. Kenye, attended the 56th GST Council Meeting on September 3 held in New Delhi, where he expressed strong support for the Union Government’s ambitious GST reform agenda.
During the deliberations, Kenye thanked Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the GST Council for spearheading reforms aimed at enhancing structural efficiency, rationalising tax rates and improving ease of doing business.
He noted that Nagaland, as a consuming state, has significantly benefited from GST implementation, with revenue collections rising from Rs. 187.57 crore in 2017 to Rs. 1076.80 crore in 2024–25.
The state’s monthly average GST collection reached Rs. 108.33 crore as of August 2025, marking a 20.89% growth over the previous fiscal year.
Kenye endorsed the reform framework built on three pillars: structural correction of inverted duty structures, rate rationalisation including reduction of slabs and taxes on essential goods, and simplification of registration, returns, and refunds.
He also supported recommendations from the Group of Ministers on life and health insurance, restructuring of the compensation cess, and rate adjustments.
Accompanied by Special Commissioner of State Taxes, Y. Mhathung Murry and Deputy Commissioner of State Taxes (Hq), Tokatoli Sohe, Kenye urged all states to unite in strengthening the GST Council’s efforts to make GST a truly “Good and Simple Tax.”
