Advisor for Law & Justice and Land Revenue, T.N. Mannen, cautioned against misinterpretation of traditional practices, stating that branding indigenous customs as “satanic” by certain Christian teachings was misguided. He called for respectful understanding and refinement of cultural values.
Mannen was speaking as the special guest at the 25th anniversary celebration of Thongpok Semchir Pongen Mungdang (TSPM) Dimapur Unit, held under the theme “Nungshilong”, meaning “Monumental Stone”, at Senden Rju, Purana Bazaar, on Wednesday.
Emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation, Mannen said losing one’s traditions equates to losing one’s identity. He lamented the decline of family storytelling in the digital age and urged revival of communal bonds.
Drawing parallels between human life and a tree, he said cultural roots must be firmly grounded for communities to thrive. He reiterated the need to uphold and refine traditional values with discernment and dignity. Highlighting the legacy of Nagaland’s first Chief Minister, P. Shilu Ao, who hailed from the Pongener community, Mannen encouraged members to take pride in their heritage and stand united for truth.
Delivering the theme address, pastor of Mongsenyimti Baptist Arogo, Linükyanger, reflected on the biblical significance of Jubilee as a time of liberty, restoration and gratitude, citing Leviticus 25:10.
Earlier, invocation was pronounced by Rev Imsümeren Pongen, welcome address by TSPM Dimapur Unit president Talilemzüung, and words of encouragement by vice president Imtitoba.
Highlights included an opening act by TSPMD Chuchuyimlang Unit, special number by Longmisa Elangtsür, and cultural song by TSPMD Longsa Unit. Short speeches were delivered by presidents of LSTM Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland. Advisor for Transport and Technical Education, Temjenmenba, also addressed the gathering.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Jubilee Convener, Planning & Fund Raising Committee, Tali Pongen, while benediction was pronounced by Rev Dr Imlimar Pongen, lecturer at DBC Dimapur.
