Nagaland T.R. calls for safeguarding Naga customary system

DIMAPUR

Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang has called upon village councils to safeguard and uphold the Naga customary system, stating that it remains central to the community’s identity and justice delivery.
Speaking at Jalukiejangdi village during the inauguration of the new council hall on Tuesday, Zeliang said village councils are the custodians of customary laws and practices, which cannot be done away with. He emphasized that every Naga must be well-versed in their respective customary laws and traditions.
Highlighting the need to frame uniform customary laws for the state, Zeliang said such efforts would help make the system more popular and effective. He expressed concern that despite the protection granted under Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, Naga customary laws are under threat and risk fading into oblivion.
“Nagas must practice their customary system in daily life to preserve their unique identity before the world,” he said, stating that unlike the Indian judiciary system, Naga customary practices are simple, prompt, and cost-effective in delivering justice.
The Deputy Chief Minister also urged citizens to protect land and its resources for future generations.
He cautioned against the practice of selling land by council chairmen or GBs without public consultation, stating that such actions must be stopped.
The inauguration programme was attended by leaders from various villages, district administration officials, and members of the public.
