Nagaland: Temjen Imna stressesfor legal awareness

DIMAPUR

Minister for Higher Education and Tourism, Temjen Imna Along, has stressed the need for greater legal awareness among the common people.
Speaking at the 22nd annual general conference of the Nagaland Judges’ Association (NJA) at Zone Niathu by the Park on Saturday, Temjen Imna described the NJA as the “cream of society,” entrusted with delivering justice to the people. He noted that while the judiciary is one of the most important organs of society, many Nagas remain unaware of their legal rights and the justice system. He called for promotion of social justice through judicial activism and urged the judiciary to proactively address issues of tribalism affecting society. On the occasion, he also presented a copy of the Constitution of India to the NJA president.
Justice Yanrenjungla Longkumer, Judge of Gauhati High Court and Portfolio Judge for Nagaland, in her address reminded judicial officers to perform their duties with integrity and humility. She emphasized that the district judiciary, being the first point of contact for laymen, must discharge its responsibilities fairly. Expressing optimism, she said that despite challenges of infrastructure and staffing, the induction of young and capable officers would strengthen the judiciary in the days ahead. She also encouraged officers to make efforts to dispose of cases and reduce backlogs.
The presidential address was delivered by the NJA president. The conference was attended by retired district and session judges Veprusa Nyekha, K. Chophy, and Khape Koza. Obituary references were made in honour of late members—Neichochiyi Suyie, Moangkaba Imchen, Mayanglima, and Imtitemsu—by observing a minute of silence.
The programme was chaired by Julian Sitlhou, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mokokchung, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Seyielenuo Mezhii, District and Session Judge Wokha cum general secretary NJA. The business session, chaired by Wonchibeni V. Patton, Principal Judge Family Court Dimapur, discussed several agendas and passed resolutions.
