DIMAPUR

In a major step towards strengthening emergency preparedness, Nagaland will train 3600 Civil Defence Wardens and Volunteers across 10 Civil Defence Districts by March 31, 2026. This was announced during a one-day Civil Defence coordination meeting-cum-workshop held on October 4 at the Directorate Headquarters, Kohima.
The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on June 9, 2025 between the Directorate General, Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and the Directorate of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, Nagaland. Under the MoU, Nagaland will also train 20 Master Trainers at the Central Training Institute, Toluvi, Dimapur.
Director General, Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, Renchamo P. Kikon, in his keynote address, highlighted the evolving geo-political challenges in the subcontinent and underscored the urgency of building Civil Defence capacity nationwide. He informed that the MHA has conceptualized the “Scheme for Training and Capacity Building of Civil Defence,” to be implemented by 2026.
The workshop was organised by the Directorate of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF, Nagaland, in compliance with MHA directives issued in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s response through Operation Sindoor.
According to a DIPR report, the programme was attended by Deputy Commissioners (Controllers of Civil Defence) and District Commandants of Home Guards (Dy. Controllers of Civil Defence) from across the state, aimed at enhancing coordination mechanisms at the district level.
Deputy Commandant General, Medozhalie Pienyu, stressed the importance of the Warden Service in Civil Defence and called upon Deputy Commissioners to appoint individuals of integrity and public standing as Wardens, who serve as crucial links between the Government and the community during emergencies.
The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A session and closing remarks by Senior Staff Officer, Mulai Lamniah, who chaired the proceedings and lauded the participants for their active engagement and commitment to community safety.
