The inaugural programme of the Tokhü Emong Mini Hornbill Festival was held at Public Ground, Wokha, on Wednesday, with chairman of SDPDB Bhandari, Achumbemo Kikon MLA, gracing the occasion as special guest.
Tokhü Emong, the post-harvest festival of the Lotha Naga community, is celebrated annually in the first week of November. Marking the end of the agricultural season, the festival is a time of thanksgiving, reconciliation, and renewal of bonds among families and villages. Traditionally observed with feasting, folk songs, dances, and exchange of gifts, it reflects the cultural heritage and communal spirit of the Lothas.
Addressing the gathering, Achumbemo underscored the importance of responsibility and critical thinking as foundations for growth and prosperity.
He reflected on the historical essence of Tokhü Emong and its role in fostering unity and progress within the Lotha community. He urged citizens to refine their lifestyle and mindset and work collectively for meaningful social change.
Calling for societal transformation and stronger relationships grounded in true brotherhood, Achumbemo emphasized collective participation in community development initiatives. He particularly stressed sanitation efforts across Wokha district, linking them to climate resilience and sustainable development. He encouraged individuals and intellectuals to lead with clarity, compassion, and purpose.
Following the formal proceedings, Achumbemo inaugurated the Tokhü stalls and declared open the Traditional Competition, which featured events such as traditional weaving and folksong performances across various categories.
In the live demonstration of traditional weaving—from cotton processing to cloth making—N. Longidang Women Cultural Troupe emerged as the winner. Wokha Town Akuk Women Cultural Troupe and Wokha Village were adjudged first and second runners-up, respectively.
In the folksong competition (men’s category), Wokha Town Akuk Cultural Troupe secured the top position. In the women’s category, Wokha Town Women Cultural Troupe won first place, followed by N. Longidang Cultural Troupe and Wokha Town Wozhuro Range Cultural Society as first and second runners-up.
