Nagaland University, across its campuses, joined the rest of the nation in commemorating National Sports Day on August 29.
At Kohima campus, a vibrant programme organised by the sports section of the campus, brought together students, faculty, and distinguished guests in a spirit of unity, highlighting the values of discipline, teamwork, and community that sports instil.
The programme was chaired by Mesanguto Meru, Asst. director of sports, and commenced with a welcome note, followed by an address from Prof. N. Venuh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus.
In his keynote speech, Prof. Venuh underscored the transformative role of sports in education and personal development, remarking that “sports reduce stress, provide valuable life skills, and promote teamwork while fostering a sense of community.” His words resonated with the audience and set the tone for the day’s events. After the University Anthem, Kikruvinuo and Tiakumla from the department of history & archaeology (3rd Semester) delivered a melodious rendition of “Top of the World,” adding a cultural note to the occasion.
A highlight of the programme was the oath taking ceremony led by the Sports Secretary, Phuyeka Yeptho, who called upon participants to uphold fairness, respect, and sportsmanship in every contest.
The oath taking ceremony was followed by the official kick-off of the ADSW Cup, marked by a spirited volleyball match between the teaching and non-teaching staff, which drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience and set the competitive spirit in motion. Next, was a volleyball match between the first-year and final-year students, and the three inter-departmental football matches.
