Nagaland: USSC highlights deprivation of basic rights

DIMAPUR

United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) president, Adekhing I. Sangtam, has expressed concern over the continued deprivation of basic human rights in Sangtam jurisdiction, citing lack of teachers, inadequate healthcare facilities and poor road connectivity.
Addressing the 77th general session of USSC held at Tütheze Village, Kiphire from January 13 to 15, 2026, the USSC president said that during its tour of the area, the conference noted that several schools had been functioning without subject teachers for four to five years despite repeated appeals to the authorities. He added that the conference had even approached the Human Rights Commission, but lamented that no positive response was forthcoming.
On healthcare, USSC observed that primary and community health centres existed in the region but were without doctors, nurses or proper medical facilities, leaving the community without access to essential services.
In the road sector, the conference pointed out that while travel from Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung offered smooth rides, entry into Sangtam jurisdiction was marked by bumpy and neglected roads, reflecting disparity in infrastructure development.
The president called upon the Sangtam community to unite and raise their voice so that the government fulfills its duty of ensuring at least basic rights and facilities.
He also drew on a traditional narrative, recalling that in ancient times the Sangtam chose the stomach portion during meat distribution. He explained that just as the stomach plays a vital role in the human body, the Sangtam community too holds a vital role in the functioning of the state. He urged Sangtam students to embrace this narrative and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Nagaland.
