Nagaland: Wild jumbos damage plantations in Wokha

CorrespondentWOKHA, DEC 29 (NPN)

A suspected herd of wild elephants damaged areca nut plantations at Tssori new village under Changpang block, Wokha district, on the night of December 28, 2025.
As the incident occurred at night, the exact number of elephants could not be confirmed, but villagers estimated the herd to be a dozen or more.
Around eight-ten farmers were affected, suffering extensive damage to their plantations and significant livelihood losses. However, no human casualties were reported.
Changpang Block VDB secretaries’ association president, PB Sen Yanthan, told Nagaland Post that the matter has been reported to the divisional forest officer (DFO) Wokha.
He highlighted that human-elephant conflicts have recurred throughout 2025 in the area, posing a serious threat to farmers’ livelihoods.
Despite repeated reports and communication with the concerned department, Yanthan expressed disappointment over the lack of relief or assistance provided so far, leaving farmers and village authorities discouraged.
The affected farmers have appealed to responsible authorities for immediate and effective measures to address the recurring conflicts, along with timely compensation and preventive support.
It may be mentioned that a ground report conducted on December 20 revealed widespread damage to sugarcane fields, orange orchards, pineapple plantations, seasonal crops and vegetables at Old Aree village, Wokha. The losses have had a direct impact on many families.
