Nagaland: WNYFD concerned over alleged police mishandling of theft case

DIMAPUR, FEB 2 (NPN)

Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has expressed deep concern over recent revelations concerning the alleged mishandling of a reported theft case and the conduct of certain police personnel.
WNYF through its media cell stated that the matter raised serious questions about the integrity, accountability, and credibility of the law-enforcement system.
Stating that the case must not be dismissed as a minor incident involving only a mobile phone, the youth body said its implications extended far beyond a single case and strike at the foundation of public trust in the police institution.
WNYF warned that if unofficial negotiations, monetary settlements, or discretionary closures of cases were occurring, it created a dangerous precedent. The front said it also raised grave concerns about how other serious cases—including motor-vehicle theft, assault, rape, or murder—could have been handled.
WNYF reminded that citizens approach the police in moments of vulnerability expecting protection, fairness, and lawful action. However, the front said that when those entrusted with enforcing the law were suspected of compromising it, the damage went beyond individual victims—eroded public confidence, delegitimized institutions, and weakened the moral authority of governance.
WNYF expressed support for the demand by Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation for an immediate, independent, and transparent inquiry into the incident and any similar practices.
Demanding that accountability must be swift, impartial, and visible, the WNYF said action must go beyond temporary suspension or routine departmental measures.
It said service termination should be seriously considered to preserve and protect the dignity, respect, and public trust vested in the police force.
Asserting restoring confidence called for decisive and exemplary action, WNYF demanded accountability and consequences for all forms of crime and injustice in society.
