College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, CAU Imphal, Jalukie, Peren, Nagaland conducted a three-day training programme on “Building the Capacity of Tribal Women Farmers in Pig Reproduction and Artificial Insemination” from January 6 to 9, 2026.
Altogether 28 participants attended the training. At the inaugural programme, a “Training Manual” was released by Dr. I. Shakuntala, Dean of the college; Prof. Gunjan Das, HoD, Department of Veterinary Medicine; and Dr. Tukheswar Chutia, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, who also served as course director.
Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Chutia highlighted the importance of upskilling women in pig breeding, while Prof. Das encouraged farmers to become potential pig producers in the state. Dean Dr. Shakuntala stressed the significance of scientific breeding and urged trainees to acquire technical knowledge to enhance competence in pig production.
During the training, sessions covered various aspects of pig breeding management including heat detection, artificial insemination, feeding and management at different stages, farrowing management, piglet care, and sanitary measures. Hands-on practice in artificial insemination was also provided to the trainees.
The valedictory session was graced by Dr. Tsileu Haikube, Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO), Government of Nagaland, as special guest. Certificates were distributed to all trainees by Dean Dr. Shakuntala.
Dr. Tsileu Haikube acknowledged the crucial role of Naga women in the piggery sector and encouraged farmers to strengthen pig farming with the scientific skills acquired from the training. Resource persons for the programme included Dr. Tukheswar Chutia (Dept. of VGO), Dr. T. Gyaneshori Devi (Dept. of LPM), Dr. Merina Devi (Dept. of LFC), Dr. Khwairakpam Ratika (Dept. of ANN), Dr. Sedeneinuo Suohu (Dept. of VPP), and Dr. Iluheibe, Farm Manager (Dept. of LFC).
