Nagaland: WTC imposes ban on borewell drilling

DIMAPUR

In response to the alarming decline of the Etsu-Tchukha water source, the Wokha Town Council (WTC) has imposed complete ban on all borewell drilling activities within its jurisdiction.
According to the order issued by ADC and Executive Officer of Wokha Town Council, Renbomo Ezung, the decision was taken in view of growing evidence that excessive and unregulated groundwater extraction has significantly impacted the sustainability of the vital water source.
The ban, effective immediately, applies to all new borewell drilling for domestic, commercial, and agricultural purposes, as well as deepening or re-drilling of existing borewells and any related groundwater extraction activities without explicit authorization.
The order will remain in force until further notice or until a comprehensive assessment confirms the safe and sustainable restoration of the water source.
WTC said the move was aimed at protecting and preserving the water source for present and future generations, in the interest of environmental conservation, water security, and public welfare.
