Government High School (GHS) Chetheba celebrated its 50th anniversary on Tuesday at the Local Ground, Chetheba, with advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, gracing the occasion as special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yhome highlighted the transformative role of education introduced by American missionaries, which rapidly spread across the Naga Hills and contributed to Nagaland achieving the third-highest literacy rate in the country. He acknowledged the pioneers and elders who embraced both Christianity and education, noting that the value placed on learning continues to shape the aspirations of Naga families.
Dr. Yhome remarked that the wealth of parents today is reflected in their investment in their children’s education. Citing the case of GHS Chetheba, he said the area—with six high schools and a population of over 15,000—deserves a Higher Secondary School, especially given the limited admission opportunities in Kohima.
Expressing concern over low enrolment in GHS Chetheba despite nearby private schools having higher numbers, he pointed out that many private institutions lack qualified teachers, unlike government schools. He called for sincerity and dedication from government teachers and urged the community to support the school through active monitoring, reporting absenteeism, and highlighting shortages.
Dr. Yhome also suggested rationalising schools by merging the primary school with the high school and assured that the Department of School Education is making continuous efforts to improve the sector. Guest of honour, Kudecho Khamo, advisor for CAWD and Taxes, paid tribute to the pioneers of the school and urged Dr. Yhome to consider upgrading GHS Chetheba to a Higher Secondary School, citing the urgent need of the Chokri Area. He emphasized the importance of quality education and encouraged youth to pursue diverse professions to contribute to societal growth.
Khamo also addressed challenges such as substance abuse and unemployment, calling upon parents to instill Christian values and guide their children with discipline and purpose.
School history was presented by Nuzota Swuro, chairman of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) and former MLA, who paid tribute to the pioneers and called upon the present generation to nurture and protect the institution.
Greetings were delivered by Vepozoyi Theyo, president of Chokri Area Public Organisation, who also appealed for the upgradation of GHS Chetheba, citing the absence of a Higher Secondary School in the area despite having eight high schools, which has led to student migration and dropouts.
Alumni representative Chothazo Nienu, Assistant Professor at Pfutsero Government College, delivered a speech, while the welcome address was given by Melesa Swuro, Assistant Headmaster of GHS Chetheba. Invocation prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. Suluveyi Rhakho, Co-ordinator, Globeserve International NM America.
A choral piece was presented by Chokri Baptist School, Chetheba. The programme concluded with a thanksgiving prayer by Rev. Muleto Nienu, Field Evangelist, Council of Chakhesang Christian Revival Church. Earlier, Kudecho Khamo released the golden jubilee souvenir, while Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome unveiled the monolith. The dedicatory prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. P. Bonny Resu, Lead Pastor, Chakhesang Baptist Church, Dimapur.
