Nagaland’s population to rise to 23,67,000 by 2030: DES

With no official district-wise population available post 2011 census in Nagaland, the state’s Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) has brought out an estimated/projected District-wise population census from 2021 to 2030 with an increase of over 3.88 lakh population by 2030.


As per the projection released by Advisor for Information Technology & Communication, Evaluation, and Economics & Statistics, H. Sethrongkyu Sangtam here has projected an increase of 388498 from 1978502 in 2011 to 2367000 by the year 2030.
The district-wise population as per 2011 census was Kohima – 267988, Dimapur – 378811, Phek – 163418, Peren – 95219, Mokokchung – 194622, Wokha – 166343, Zunheboto – 140757, Tuensang – 196596, Kiphire – 74004, Longleng – 50484 and Mon – 250260 totaling to 1978502.


Post the 2011 census, Nagaland government bifurcated Tseminyu from Kohima with 56839 population, Dimapur was separated into 3 districts with Dimapur – 204319, Chumoukedima – 132432 & Niuland – 42060, Tuensang has also been divided into 3 districts with Tuensang – 107135, Noklak – 44434 & Shamator – 34027.


The estimated population for all the districts in 2023 stood at 2213300: Kohima 238309, Tseminyu 62972, Dimapur 230601, Chumoukedima 149467, Niuland 47470, Phek 184439, Peren 107467, Mokokchung – 221624, Wokha 187740, Zunheboto 158863, Tuensang 120916, Noklak 62565, Shamator 38404, Kiphire 83523, Longleng 56978 and Mon 282451.


The population of the state is expected to increase to 2367000 by the year 2030, an increase of 388498 from that of 2011: Kohima 252610, Tseminyu 68000, Dimapur 244439, Chumoukedima 158436, Niuland 50319, Phek 195507, Peren 113916, Mokokchung 232838, Wokha 199006, Zunheboto 168396, Tuensang 128172, Noklak 66319, Shamator 40709, Kiphire 88535, Longleng 299401 and Mon 299401.


The DES as the nodal agency for all official statistics in the State has made an effort to analyse the population of 2011 census on the basis of habitations and jurisdictions for the old and new districts and estimated/projected district wise population, said DES Director Neidilhou Angami.


The importance and requirements of district wise population is for planning and policy formulation for distribution or allocation of funds for development purposes or for development of infrastructure like Roads, Electricity, Hospital, School, etc or implementation of social welfare schemes, the department said.


The district wise population gives a basic idea for the most judicious policy to be adopted for allocating precious resources, it said.
In the administrative approval for the census, it said that while making the projection, the report of the technical group on population projection, National Commission on Population, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for the state was taken and the district wise ratios of population was calculated from the 2011 census.


For the newly created districts, the ratio for the districts for 2011 was calculated after summing up the population of the habitations in the respective jurisdiction of the new districts as created, it stated.
