State Resource Centre for Women and State Social Welfare Board in commemoration of National Girl Child day organized an event at Chedema Basa on January 24 on the theme “The girl child: Our support today, our security tomorrow”.
Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) chairperson Bano Vinito delivered the keynote address and shared a brief introduction of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate Her) campaign launched by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi at Panipat, Haryana.
Speaking on the theme, Vinito said supporting a girl child today would bring hope not only for individual girl child but for the society as a whole in future. Accentuating the fact she said that the girl child was not liability but an asset just as a boy child.
Stressing on the importance of upbringing a child, she said parents need a careful plan and should hold children’s hand, teach, guide and help them to learn to work and develop responsibility.
Pointing out that there was no short cut or miracle to gain knowledge, NSSWB chairperson said every child should receive education in today’s competitive and challenging world to gain courage, confidence, enlighten, progress and lead a good life. She also said that nation would benefit from an educated child when they grow up to be a responsible citizen. She urged the parents to equip a girl child with education before marriage because education empowers the child.
Kenei Belho from Childline Kohima also spoke on the occasion. Introducing Childline India Foundation, she said that there are 282 childline operating across India. She also shared Childline number (1098) emergency phone service for children in need of aid and assistance.
Chedema village council chairman Neipuzo thanked the organizers for selecting Chedema to commemorate the National Girl Child Day and for educating them about the importance of the girl child.
The programme was attended by children, village elders, church leaders and women and men of all age groups.
