National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland hosted the inaugural session of a two-day National Symposium on “Implementation of New Education Policy 2020: Challenges and Opportunities in North-East Region” on February 27, drawing enthusiastic participation from academicians, policymakers, researchers and students from across the country.
The symposium seeks to deliberate on the effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with special focus on the unique socio-economic and cultural landscape of the North-East region.
The inaugural session was graced by chairman, NTEF, EC-NAAC and NBA, professor Anil D. Sahasrabudhe as chief guest, and president, ABRSM, professor Narayan Lal Gupta as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, professor Sahasrabudhe underscored the visionary framework of NEP 2020 and its potential to enhance the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), promote regional languages, integrate vocational education and strengthen digital learning ecosystems. He said the North-East region holds immense academic and cultural potential that can be harnessed through collaborative institutional efforts and policy-driven reforms.
He encouraged institutions like NIT to actively support students in pursuing their careers and urged teachers to remain updated in their respective fields. Challenging students to work hard, he said that consistent effort would ultimately lead to success and growth.
Professor Gupta highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge systems and promoting inclusive and equitable education. He stressed that the successful implementation of NEP 2020 requires active participation from faculty members, administrators, students and government bodies.
Stating that education forms the foundation of a developed India, he noted that NEP 2020 is the third education policy introduced in the country since independence. He observed that the pace of transformation in the education sector is rapid and elaborated on the evolving landscape of higher education in India.
Other dignitaries present at the inaugural session included director NIT Sikkim, professor M.C. Govil, Sangathan Mantri ABRSM, Sh. Mahinder Kapoor, convenor ABRSM NIT Forum, professor M.K.Shrimali, and co-convenor ABRSM NIT Forum, professor Rajeshwar Singh Banshtu.
Earlier, the inaugural ceremony began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by a welcome address by the organizing secretary. Technical sessions and panel discussions will continue over the next two days, focusing on region-specific challenges and opportunities for effective implementation of NEP 2020 in the North-East region.
