NAWO reiterates need to ensure women safety

While commending Kohima Police for arresting Vilie alias Avilie Mere from Tsiesema Basa accused of raping a five-year old girl on July 9, Northern Angami Women Organisation (NAWO) has reiterated the urgent need for stricter measures to ensure the safety of women especially the children.

In a statement, NAWO president, Thinuohe-ü Loucü and general secretary, Luotuonuo Tseikhanuo said, “NAWO reiterates the urgent need for stricter measures to ensure the safety of our womenfolk, especially our children, whom we have failed time and again when we allow such offenses to be committed freely in our purview.”

NAWO has also demanded befitting punishment to the accused and urged the concerned authority to ensure timely delivery of justice befitting the accused thereof.
It has also appealed the government of Nagaland that the accused be denied bail of any form at any stage and that punishment of the strictest measure was conferred on the criminal so that such heinous crimes are not repeated in the future whatsoever.

NAWO also stressed upon swift and timely action to be initiated on the convict with utmost severity saying that the atrocity has deeply shaken the organisation to its core.
In another condemnation note, Northern Angami Women Organisation Group-C (NAWO-C) has condemned the “heinous act” of raping a minor girl by Vilie alias Avilie Mere son of late. Kikrukhrietuo Mere of Tsiesema Basa on July 9.

The organisation said that the despicable crime committed by the accused was alien to the culture and has caused immeasurable physical and mental trauma to the victim and family and has tarnished the good image of the Angami community.

NAWO-C therefore urged the competent authority to award strictest punishment as per the law of the land.
The organisation further cautioned that any one bailing the culprit will be doing at their own risk.
