Nagaland Bar Association at its annual general meeting held on April 25 has unanimously extended the tenure of the existing office bearers for another term.
NBA informed that president A. Zhimomi, along with vice president Zuchumpeni Ngullie, secretary Seyielhouto Keyho, joint secretary Akum Pongen, and treasurer Sentimenla, will continue to lead the association.
NBA president Zhimomi expressed gratitude to the members for their continued trust and confidence in the leadership.
At the meeting, key legal and governance matters were deliberated upon. The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a separate High Court for Nagaland, entrusting the High Court Bar Association, Kohima, with the responsibility to spearhead efforts.
Another resolution addressed the ongoing practice of appointing Advocate Generals from outside the state, a tradition that has persisted since Nagaland attained statehood in 1963.
NBA criticized the government’s reluctance to select candidates from within the state’s legal fraternity, terming it a “disservice to the people and an affront to the legal community.”
The association resolved to publicly reiterate its opposition to this practice.
Concerns were also raised regarding allegations that some advocates were simultaneously employed in government service, a violation of the Advocates Act.
In this regard, NBA cautioned that strict action will be initiated against violators.
The resolutions reflect the association’s continued efforts to strengthen legal integrity and advocate for structural reforms in the state’s judiciary.
