DIMAPUR, SEP 12 (NPN): Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) has issued a rebuttal to the September 8, 2026 press statement issued by additional advocate generals and government panel advocates, who accused the Bar of questioning the engagement of the incumbent Advocate General (AG) “without any Constitutional mandate.”
In a press release, NBA president A. Zhimomi and joint secretary Akum Pongen said the executive committee of the Bar at a meeting held on September 11, 2026 deliberated on government panel advocates’ press statement, which had described the NBA’s position as being “in no uncertain terms in defiance of reason and fair play.”
They also alleged that the Bar’s statement was “not in consonance with the mandate of the Constitution” and was “manifestly arbitrary and without any accepted standard of conduct.”
NBA said its executive committee deliberated on the statement and unanimously rejected what it described as the government panel advocates’ opposition to the Bar’s position. The association said its position was “clear, unambiguous and twofold”: that the Advocate General of Nagaland should be appointed or engaged from among the state’s own legal fraternity and that the incumbent Advocate General had insulted and demeaned the people he represents.
NBA said it was “inconceivable” that members of the Bar serving as government panel advocates chose to oppose decisions taken by the association.
The executive committee resolved to issue a rebuttal and seek the views of its federating units on the course of action to be taken in response to what it described as opposition to the Bar’s decisions.
Quoting an unnamed senior member of the Bar, the NBA said the September 8 statement was “missing the forest for the trees.”
Further, the association said the interests of the legal fraternity should not be sacrificed for personal gain and expressed hope that “good sense will prevail.” It added that the decisions taken by the Bar would be followed through.
