The Youth Ministry Department of Nagamese Baptist Churches Association (NBCA) organized its first Indigenous Sports Meet at Dhobi ghat ground in Sachu colony on Saturday. The objective of the sports meet was to promote indigenous sports and relive the bygone era, the 80s when sports was given a ‘local twist.’
Games like seven-stones, spear throwing, tug of war, 80s style football, long jump and other traditional sports were organized for youngsters from various Nagamese Baptist churches in Nagaland.
Speaking on the occasion as guest of honor, Raphael Newmai lauded NBCA Youth Ministry for the innovative approach to organizing a sports event. He said that though the world of sports have evolved over the years, the idea of playing traditional and indigenous sports was a refreshing way to help one connect with his/her roots.
He further pointed out that though sports were primarily aimed at showing one’s skills, it also helped to bring about unity, foster camaraderie and train one to be spiritually disciplined.
Other highlights of the programme included, invocation by Longkhum, youth pastor UBC Bor Lengri; welcome address by NBCA youth secretary, Monelo Apon; and special presentation led by UBC Choto Lengri youth pastor Khovelu. The programme was chaired by Toshi, pastor Salvation Baptist Church.
