DIMAPUR, JUN 16 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has strongly condemned election-related violence and urged elected representatives to remain accountable to the promises made to voters during election campaigns.
In a press release, NBCC secretary for social concern, Dr. Villo Naleo, said the sanctity of elections must be upheld at all times, stressing that democracy derives its legitimacy from free, fair and peaceful participation by the people.
Expressing concern over what it described as the growing normalisation of violence, intimidation and vandalism in political contests, the church said such practices had no place in a democratic society and threatened public trust in democratic institutions.
NBCC particularly condemned the recent incident of poll-related violence in Wokha, including the reported attack on candidates, describing the acts as “reprehensible and utterly unacceptable.”
“No political ambition, partisan loyalty or electoral gain can ever justify violence,” NBCC stated. It called for those responsible for perpetrating, instigating or condoning such acts to be held accountable under the law.
NBCC also urged political parties, civil society organisations and community leaders to reject violence and promote a political culture based on respect, dialogue and democratic values. The council expressed solidarity with victims of election-related violence irrespective of political affiliation and appealed to citizens to reject hatred, intimidation and divisive politics.
Beyond the issue of poll violence, NBCC reminded elected MLAs and municipal councillors of the commitments they made to the electorate during their campaigns.
Acknowledging that not every promise can be fulfilled, the council said elected representatives must demonstrate sincerity, transparency and tangible efforts toward the welfare and development of their constituencies.
Stressing that public office was a sacred trust, NBCC said leaders must serve with integrity, diligence and accountability, adding that democracy flourishes not only through elections but also through responsible leadership and public service.
