Naga Club officially released its written constitution at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on Saturday in the presence of club officials and people from various walks of life. It was formally released by Khyomo Lotha, who served as Naga Club’s caretaker between 1965 and 1969.
In his opening remark, club’s finance secretary and constitution drafting committee convener Kuolachalie Seyie termed the document as the greatest gift for the Nagas from God. He said the club had constituted a drafting committee and that its draft constitution was approved during an executive meeting of the club on November 14.
As an elderly organisation to be guided with certain rules and regulations, Kuolachalie explained that it was necessary for Naga Club to have its own constitution, which could be amended and restructured, when necessary. He said whosever was not affiliated to the club could do so gradually as the institution was for all Naga people.
Speaking on the occasion, Khyomo said Naga Club had no written constitution during his time. However, in those days, Naga people were very friendly, honest and truthful among themselves and all Naga tribes supported the club, he added.
The former caretaker asserted that the club then was well governed by the elderly and was not organised in any secrecy and that it was accessible by all the Nagas. He said even his designation as a caretaker was not done through election or appointment, but he just entrusted with the task in good faith.
He acknowledged the efforts made by the drafting committee to enable Naga Club have its own constitution now and also lauded the scope that it could be amended as and when necessary.
Meanwhile, the dedicatory payer was pronounced by Rev Dr Mazie Nakhro, while the closing remarks were proposed by drafting committee member secretary John Lohe.
Kuolachalie chaired the function, which concluded with a high tea. This was stated in a press communiqué issued by club’s centenary celebrations publicity committee.
