DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): Naga Council Dimapur (NCD)’s vigilance committee has urged the department of power Nagaland (DoPN) to follow the existing electricity tariff in the district, citing its hot and humid climate and residents’ heavy reliance on electrical appliances.
In a letter to the chief engineer (distribution and revenue), submitted through the executive engineer (electrical) Dimapur, committee convener Sejongmong and secretary Vekho Vero said several electrical appliances had become essential for people across all sections of society because of local climatic conditions.
The committee claimed that Nagaland’s revised electricity tariff was comparatively high when measured against rates in neighbouring and other states, placing an additional burden on consumers.
It cited Delhi, where consumption of up to 200 kWh is charged at Rs 3 per kWh and 201-400 kWh at Rs 4.50 per kWh, and Assam, where up to 120 kWh is charged at Rs 4.25 per kWh and 121-240 kWh at Rs 6.50 per kWh.
By comparison, the committee said Nagaland’s tariff slabs stand at Rs 5.70 per kWh for 0-30 kWh, Rs 6 per kWh for 31-100 kWh and Rs 7.33 per kWh for 101-250 kWh.
The vigilance committee has, therefore, appealed to the department to consider its request urgently and adhere to the existing tariff structure in Dimapur.
