NCD suggests measures to ease Dimapur traffic

DIMAPUR, JUN 17 (NPN): Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has submitted a set of recommendations to the deputy commissioner (DC) Dimapur aimed at improving traffic management and reducing congestion in the city.
In a letter to DC Dimapur, NCD vice president (Admn) M Biremong Yimkhiung and general secretary LK Peter Anal proposed several measures to address chronic traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours. NCD suggested that all schools within Dimapur city provide designated drop-off and pick-up facilities within their campuses to prevent roadside congestion during school hours. It also recommended different timings for schools located along the same road stretches and intersections. To improve parking availability and traffic flow, NCD urged shop owners, particularly those operating in the heart of city, to park their vehicles at alternative locations rather than occupying spaces intended for customers.
It further called for the removal of abandoned and unused vehicles from roadsides after due notice and urged authorities to prevent dumping of construction materials and debris along public roads. Among other recommendations, NCD sought the removal of army vehicles parked along the expanded roadside between Dhobinala and Signal Angami Village. The council also appealed for action against roadside vending activities, including the sale of vegetables, clothing, snacks and other goods, which it said obstruct pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Further, NCD proposed allowing commercial establishments to remain open until 9pm under the protection of law enforcement agencies. It maintained that extended business hours could help ease traffic while promoting economic activity. The council also recommended that future commercial buildings be granted construction permits only after providing adequate parking facilities. Expressing concern over congestion at New Market, NCD urged authorities to streamline the operation of food stalls, carts and vendors occupying parking spaces and footpaths in the area.
It further appealed to the state government to construct additional flyovers in and around key parts of the city, stating that improved infrastructure was necessary to cope with increasing population growth and traffic volume. NCD said the proposed measures would help improve traffic flow, enhance the city’s appeal as Nagaland’s commercial hub and support economic growth.
