NCSU raises concern over road conditions in Eastern Nagaland

Correspondent KOHIMA, May 26 (NPN):

The Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) has expressed serious dismay over the appalling condition of roads in the eastern districts of Nagaland, particularly in Tuensang, Shamator, and Kiphire. During its recent district tour, the Union highlighted that these roads have severely deteriorated since the state government took over their maintenance, and urged urgent collective action.
Addressing a public gathering at the inauguration of the NCSU Shamator District Unit Office, NCSU vice-president Hoshito Assumi drew sharp comparisons between the past and present state of key National Highway routes. He pointed out that from 1987 to 2012, when the roads were maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under GRIEF Company, the conditions were considerably better. “But ever since the Nagaland State PWD took over, the roads have gone from bad to worse,” he lamented.
He described the roads between Tuensang-Shamator-Kiphire as “filled with empty fishery ponds,” calling them a danger to commuters and an embarrassment to the state. “National Highway maintenance funds are sanctioned every three years, yet these roads remain untouched,” he said, urging tribal bodies, student unions, MLAs, and civil society groups to unite in pushing for urgent repairs. “Road is life,” he added. “Without connectivity, all development efforts come to a standstill.”
The grim observations on road infrastructure came in the backdrop of NCSU’s statewide district tour led by its president Pele Khezhie. The team visited several districts including Tseminyu, Wokha, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Shamator, Zunheboto, and Phek.
