The National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland region, in collaboration with the Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID), organized an early celebration of International Domestic Workers’ Day under the theme “From the Shadow to the Spotlight: Valuing Domestic Workers’ Contribution”. The event, held to honor domestic workers, brought together over 300 participants.
Guest of honor Sr. Benny Fernandes acknowledged the essential role of domestic workers in household care and the economy, while chief guest, NEISSR principal Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, called for an end to child labor, citing statistics that over 11,000 children in Nagaland and 58,000 across India are engaged in domestic work.
The celebration emphasized the need for domestic workers to be recognized under labor laws and provided with access to healthcare, education, and social protection. Speakers urged collective action to ensure dignity, safety, and fair working conditions.
Domestic workers, mostly women and girls, play a crucial role in households and economies, providing cleaning, cooking, and caregiving services. However, many remain in the informal sector, facing job insecurity, unfair wages, and lack of social protection. In Nagaland, domestic work continues to rise with more working women and nuclear families, yet challenges of exploitation persist.
