The International Relations (IR) Programme of North East Christian University (NECU) organized its first NECU Model United Nations (MUN) on October 24 to commemorate United Nations Day.
According to a press release issued by NECU, the session was formally opened by Dr. Hutoka Sumi, who assumed the role of UN Secretary-General.
A welcome address was delivered by Dr. Chibenthung Yanthan, who shared the conceptual journey of the initiative, followed by a brief history of the United Nations presented by Vivekananda Das, MA student of the IR Programme.
Ten students representing countries including the United States, India, China, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Germany participated in the General Assembly, presenting resolutions on various global issues.
Witenthuibo Chawang, an alumnus of the IR Programme, presided over the session as president of the General Assembly. The plenary discussions focused on themes such as multilateralism, peace and security, human rights, climate change, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and respect for international law.
Delegates from India, Japan and Singapore raised concerns over the non-inclusive nature of the UN Security Council and called for India’s inclusion as a permanent member.
Chan Seth, representing Myanmar, advocated for recognition of the National United Government as the legitimate democratic authority, while Pongmei P. Konyak, representing China, supported the two-state solution to address the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
The proposed resolutions were put to vote, and the session concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Hutoka Sumi and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Keneisenuo Solo, Coordinator of the IR Programme.
