NMC approves 1.37 lakh MBBS seats for 2026-27
National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 1,36,939 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, up from 1,27,028 in the previous year, following the establishment of new medical colleges and increased intake at existing institutions.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) released the latest MBBS seat matrix on Wednesday, excluding the Institutes of National Importance (INIs). The NMC said the revised matrix reflects approvals granted for new colleges and expansion of seats in existing medical institutions.
The regulator, however, clarified that the seat matrix is provisional and may be revised depending on the outcome of pending appeals before the Appeal Committee or other competent authorities. Any changes will be updated on the NMC website.
The commission directed central and state authorities to conduct admissions strictly against the approved seats and report any discrepancies to MARB. It warned that admissions beyond the sanctioned intake would violate the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and invite regulatory and penal action.
In a communication to medical colleges, universities and counselling authorities, NMC secretary Dr Raghav Langer reiterated that admissions for the 2026-27 session must strictly follow the approved seat matrix.
