The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, observed World NGO Day on February 27, 2026, highlighting the vital contributions of NGOs in promoting social change and community development.
MSW trainee Zuben N. Tsanglao opened the programme, stressing the everyday acts of service by NGOs, including community teaching, cleanliness drives, and humanitarian relief.
Assistant Professor Dr. Toli H. Kiba delivered a comprehensive talk on the role of NGOs as grassroots pillars of civil society.
She explained the 2026 International World NGO Day theme, “Restoring Dignity through Inclusion,” and emphasized how NGOs bridge government services and marginalized communities.
Dr. Toli noted that across India—and particularly in Nagaland—NGOs play a crucial role in empowering vulnerable groups, delivering essential services, advocating for marginalized communities, and responding to humanitarian crises.
She cited the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement as a global example of humanitarian assistance during conflicts.
At the same time, she acknowledged the transformative potential of NGOs despite persistent challenges, including financial constraints, restrictions under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), irregular project support, sustainability concerns, and inconsistent operations among some organizations.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment among trainees to strengthen engagement with NGOs and build inclusive, sustainable communities.
