NEISSR sports highlights role of sports in social transformation

DIMAPUR, Oct 7 (NPN): The North East Institute of Social Sciences & Research (NEISSR) kicked off its 12th Sports Meet 2026 under the theme “Powered by Passion, Fueled by Excellence,” with renowned journalist and sports presenter Medolenuo Ambrocia Loucü attending as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Loucü shared insights from her professional journey, emphasizing that individuals need not have their entire future mapped out before taking their first step. She encouraged trainees to begin with the interests, resources and opportunities available to them, allowing their passions to evolve through experience. While passion serves as the starting point, she said, excellence is achieved through preparation, discipline, continuous learning and perseverance.
A key focus of her address was the connection between sports and social work. She highlighted sports as a powerful platform that brings people together across differences of language, culture, social background and status, fostering participation, inclusion and mutual respect. According to her, these values closely align with the core objectives of social work in building stronger and more inclusive communities.
Loucü further urged trainees to view sports development beyond competitions and medals. She pointed out that issues such as access to safe playing spaces, quality training, education, family support, financial constraints, injuries and mental well-being are important social concerns that require attention. In this context, she underscored the growing relevance of social work within the sporting ecosystem.
Highlighting the role of sports social workers, she emphasized the need to recognize athletes as individuals beyond their performances. Social workers, she noted, can help create supportive environments by addressing athletes’ personal, educational, financial, family and emotional needs. She also stressed that sports can serve as an effective means of engaging young people who may otherwise remain outside formal support systems, thereby promoting confidence, belonging and social development.
Encouraging trainees to embrace emerging professional opportunities, Loucü advised them to remain open to new experiences, learn from every opportunity and not hesitate to step into unfamiliar spaces. She also reminded participants that sports nurture values such as respect, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship, qualities that extend well beyond the field of competition.
Speaking on the occasion, vice principal of NEISSR, Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, highlighted the importance of guidance, encouragement and continuous learning in helping young people discover and pursue their aspirations. He stated that sports provide valuable lessons in cooperation, perseverance, discipline, teamwork and mutual respect, all of which are essential qualities for future social work professionals.
Fr. Khing also encouraged teams to compete with determination while upholding sportsmanship and friendship. He emphasized that passion must be supported by knowledge, skills and experience to help trainees grow into responsible individuals and competent professionals.
Earlier, Games and Sports Secretary of the Students’ Community Service Council (SCSC), Keneisetuo Aron Rutsa, welcomed attendees and emphasized the role of sports in strengthening relationships, discipline, unity and teamwork.
The programme also featured a special musical presentation by Pinika Yepthomi, while the vote of thanks was delivered by president of SCSC, Medemwati Longkumer, bringing the inaugural ceremony of the 12th Sports Meet to a close.
