DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) has unequivocally condemned the brutal and excessive use of force by police against students participating in the peaceful protest in New Delhi on July 20, 2026.
In a statement issued by NESO secretary general Mutsikhoyo Yhobu and chairman Samuel B Jyrwa, NESO described the disturbing scenes of baton charges, tear gas and reported deployment of plainclothes personnel armed with lathis against unarmed students as an alarming assault on democratic values and the constitutional rights of citizens to peacefully assemble and express legitimate grievances.
Strongly criticising the Government of India for its “insensitive handling” of an issue that directly affects the future of millions of students and young aspirants across the country, NESO said that instead of engaging with the concerns of the students through meaningful dialogue and constructive intervention, the authorities resorted to repression and intimidation.
The grievances raised by the protesting students—including repeated competitive examination paper leaks and the urgent need for transparency, accountability, fairness and integrity in recruitment and examination systems—were legitimate and demanded immediate attention, NESO asserted. It maintained that the aspirations and hard work of countless deserving students must never be sacrificed because of systemic failures, corruption or administrative negligence.
NESO expressed unwavering solidarity with all aggrieved students who courageously participated in the peaceful movement and extended heartfelt concern to those who sustained injuries during the police crackdown. It wished them a speedy recovery and reaffirmed steadfast support for their pursuit of justice and institutional reforms.
The organisation strongly appealed to the Government of India to immediately address the genuine grievances and demands of the students through sincere dialogue, ensure accountability for the excessive use of force, and implement comprehensive reforms to restore credibility, transparency and integrity in the country’s examination and recruitment systems.
