Advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan on Tuesday informed that a new Common Agriculture Policy was in progress that will set a new standards for the environment and make agriculture more sustainable as it will help the farmers.
He therefore, encouraged the officers and staff of agriculture department to put collaborative efforts and value ideas to face the challenges ahead. Yanthan was speaking at the State Level Review meeting of the agriculture department held at the Conference Hall, Hotel Japfu Kohima on October 17.
The advisor also expressed concern on the challenges faced by the farming community in the state due to climate change and change in lifestyle of the people. To address the issues, Yanthan encouraged the department officers to infuse modern technology that was applicable and implement the schemes to bring change in the agriculture farming sectors.
He also urged the department to make agriculture attractive by focusing on farmers as a business and enterprise and help them create better marketing linkages facilities and channels.
Speaking as guest of honour, Agriculture Production Commissioner, R. Binchilo Thong apprised all the SDAOs and DAOs to execute their duties and bring out the solution to the local problems in their respective areas. Thong also encouraged all the field officers and staff to be stationed in the respective place of posting in view of the onset of rabi season, and disseminate necessary advisory to the farmers on time.
Additional director C.Peter Yanthan in his keynote address said that the review meeting was to retrospect the works and performances in the field, and also to examine the progress and identify any challenges or barriers that were inhibiting the execution of the performances.
He added that to make agriculture fit for 2030, the new Common Agricultural Policy more effective, a joint effort will able to reach the department fundamental goal.
The review meeting was chaired by director of Agriculture, M. Ben Yanthan and was followed by a technical session. The meeting was attended by all the SDAOs and DAOS from all the districts.
