Dimapur: New Market GB has expressed serious concern over the abduction of businessman Altaf Hussain from New Market on October 28, stating that the incident has once again raised concerns over the safety and security of traders, residents and the general public.
In a press statement, New Market GB, Khekishe Aye said that although Hussain had since been released, the incident could not be treated as an isolated occurrence, particularly in view of recurring criminal incidents in and around the busy commercial hub despite repeated appeals to the authorities for improved security.
Pointing out that New Market is a crowded commercial centre frequented by traders, shopkeepers, customers and residents, the GB said the incident had created fear and insecurity among the public and raised questions about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements.
The GB urged the police and district administration to thoroughly investigate the abduction, identify those involved and ensure that the perpetrators were brought to justice. It stressed that the victim’s release should not bring an end to the investigation or accountability.
The statement also called for immediate strengthening of security in and around New Market through increased police presence, regular patrolling, effective surveillance and preventive measures to avert similar incidents.
Emphasising that New Market is home to people from different communities living and earning their livelihoods peacefully, the GB appealed to the authorities to take the repeated security concerns of the locality seriously, stating that public safety should not be compromised.
