New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI): All India Newspaper Editors’ Conference (AINEC) on Saturday expressed concern over alleged rising attacks on journalists, curbs on freedom of expression and mounting financial pressures on media organisations.
In a statement, AINEC said editors and representatives from across the country discussed press freedom, journalist safety and challenges faced by small and medium newspapers. It alleged that existing advertisement policies of the Centre, state governments and Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) tend to favour larger publications, and urged the Information & Broadcasting Ministry to address the concerns of smaller newspapers.
“The members expressed deep concern over increasing attacks on journalists, restrictions on freedom of expression, and the mounting economic pressures confronting media organisations,” the statement said. The conference unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the Centre and state governments to provide adequate protection, support and assistance to journalists and media professionals so they can discharge their duties “without fear, intimidation or interference.”
AINEC said uneven advertisement distribution was creating financial strain for small and medium newspapers, and urged Centre to frame policies ensuring fair and equitable distribution of government advertisements among publications of all sizes.
