DIMAPUR, JUL 30 (NPN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has set 2029 as the target for completing the strategically important 78.42-km Dimapur (Dhansiri)-Kohima (Zubza) New Railway Line Project, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost socio-economic development in Nagaland and the Northeast.
The target was reiterated during an inspection by NFR (Construction) general manager Ashish Bansal, who reviewed progress of tunnels, bridges, station yards and other major works. He stressed timely completion while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and engineering.
The project, which will connect Kohima to the national railway network for the first time, passes through Karbi Anglong and Chümoukedima and Kohima districts. It comprises eight stations-Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Menguzuma and Zubza. Dhansiri, Shokhuvi and Molvom stations have already been completed.
The railway line includes 20 tunnels with a total length of 31,169 metres, 27 major bridges and 149 minor bridges. The Dhansiri-Shokhuvi section was commissioned in October 2021, followed by the Shokhuvi-Molvom section in March 2025. Passenger services currently operate from Shokhuvi to Guwahati and Naharlagun.
Despite difficult terrain and geological challenges, NFR said construction on the remaining sections was progressing steadily with multiple tunnel faces under simultaneous execution. During the inspection, Bansal appreciated the efforts of engineers and construction teams and called for sustained coordination to achieve the 2029 target.
